The great English safari

by admin in Travel Destinations

Ever since the United Kingdom lost its African colonies, there haven’t been many safaris in British soil. Not many, however, doesn’t mean the same as none. One thing that keeps the Bedfordshire hotels full is the Wooburn Safari Park.

The park opened in 1970 and it’s still a big success. Visitors can drive around the park and look at the animals as they run free in their enclosures. It’s naturally not a hunting safari. In fact, the park has had great success at breeding animals that are endangered in the wild, the last and perhaps greatest success being the successful birth of a Rothschild giraffe.

Being a safari park above all other things, the park features mostly African animals. Elephants, white rhinos, zebras, lions and apes and monkeys, among others, can be seen and captured on film at the park. But there is also a number of animals from other parts of the world, the most notorious being bisons, wolves, black bears and tigers.

But perhaps the most endearing part of the safari park is the Leisure Center. There you can see all the smaller animals, from reptiles to penguins, but also some small mammals, including some marmosets that are allowed to roam free.
