Majorca is the largest island in the chain called the Balearic Islands. They are located off the east coast of mainland Spain and are a very popular summer holiday destination for people from all around the world. Majorca is a sun and sea island that is visited by over six million people every year. The southern coastlines are heavily built up with apartments and high rise hotels. Once you get away from that coastal area, you will then find the unspoiled Tramuntana hills. Recently there has been a lot of rebuilding and the ghettos of Magaluf is one of those areas. They have literally blown up the old style hotels and replaced them with new ones. This is their effort to rebrand the island and update those old buildings. Palma is the capitol of Majorca and has now become a small but trendy city.
Ibiza holidays are very different from what you will find on Majorca. Ibiza is the party island with many partygoers who enjoy the nightlife. This island is well known for its rave scene that you will find in the charming hippy-chic town capitol. In this town you will also find the resort Plays d’en Bossa and the high rise canyons of San Antonino. Once you leave this part of the island, you will be amazed at how rural the rest of the island is.
Since the 1930s, the island of Majorca has been a retreat for the rich and famous with tourists not arriving in the late 1950s. It is now talked about as the exotic holiday that is taken abroad. Then in the 80s it became the place to go for cheap fun that takes place in the sun so in the 90s, the authorities felt it was time for a face life. The name of Majorca was retired and it went back to the Spanish name of Mallorca. These day you can book an all inclusive Majorca holiday as the package resorts are still there but the excesses have been stopped. This island is now as it was, with its celebrated style and its beautiful people. Shopping on the Balearic islands included the traditional craftsmanship of hand embroidered works, furniture and ceramics that are hand painted. You can also return home with carved olive wood panels, glassware and things made from palm leaves and raffia. They also offer wrought ironwork, shoes that are handmade and their famous pearls as well as other costume jewelry.
